APCA Strategic Plan now available

APCA has published its Strategic Plan, 2007-10. The plan, the second issued since APCA’s launch, is derived from our core programme areas (advocacy, education and training, standards, partnerships, monitoring and evaluation, research and organisational development) and is centred on the following objectives:
- To encourage at least three governments across Africa to support affordable and appropriate palliative care, which is to be incorporated into the whole spectrum of health care services, including promoting the availability of palliative care drugs for all in need.
- To encourage the establishment of new national palliative care associations in at least five African countries and support the work of at least twelve associations.
- To facilitate the delivery of palliative care training programmes suitable for African countries in at least four African countries.
- To develop and promote quality standards in palliative care training and service provision for different levels of health professionals and care providers.
- To generate and disseminate information / data, on an on-going basis, to inform the development of evidence-based palliative care services in Africa.
- To generate resources to ensure the sustainability of APCA throughout the period of the plan and beyond.
- To develop capacity within APCA to support its activities.
In a foreword co-authored with APCA’s Executive Director, Dr Faith Mwangi-Powell, APCA’s Chair, Kath Defilippi, stated: ‘[This plan] sets out our agenda for the next three years, an agenda that is enshrined by our strap line ‘extending coverage, ensuring quality’ … More importantly for APCA, being a relatively new organisation, this plan has helped us crystallise our niche as a pan-African palliative care organisation that is strategically placed to provide African solutions to African problems. We hope to maximise our efforts to capitalise on our own strengths, opportunities and collaborative efforts to move this plan forward.
