African Palliative Care Association

Palliative care partnerships

As part of its work to scale-up quality palliative care provision across Africa, APCA has joined with the Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa (FHSSA) to promote mutually beneficial one-to-one partnerships between USA- and African-based local service providers.

Through moral, technical and financial support, it is hoped that such partnerships will ensure a good quality of care provided to a greater number of people in need.  More specifically, the partnership scheme’s objectives are:

  • To strengthen overall palliative care development in Africa by coordinating strategic partnerships between American and Africa providers.
  • For FHSSA and APCA to identify the local providers to partner in their respective areas.
  • To communicate effectively about the working partnerships.
  • To each provide culturally sensitive support and assistance to the local providers.

The relationship between the various parties in this partnership is outline below.

Some of the advantages of the partnership for African local providers can include:

  • Moral support
  • Financial support
  • Technical assistance
  • Donation of supplies
  • Help with strategic planning
  • Exchange visits
  • First-hand education of palliative care in the USA
  • Rural projects given the ability to become more sustainable
