Professor Olaitan Soyannwo

Olaitan Soyannwo is a professor of Anaesthesia at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and a Consultant Anaesthetist to the University College Hospital, Ibadan. She is also the President of the Society of Anaesthetists of West Africa, and the Dean of Clinical Sciences of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan . Her principal area of interest is pain education and public information.

She has been active in advocating for effective pain management and opioid availability in developing countries for over two decades. Since 2002 she has spearheaded the development of palliative care services and education in Nigeria. She is co-founder of the Society for the Study of Pain, Nigeria, and the Centre for Palliative Care, Nigeria, and has also served as a consultant to the National Health Development Project in The Gambia.

She is currently a member of the Council of the West African College of Surgeons, and the International Association for the Study of Pain . Additionally, she serves on the Board of the African Palliative Care Association and the PEPFAR Evaluation Committee of the Institute of Medicine, of the American Academy of Science.
