Trained at the University Centre for Health Sciences, University of Yaounde, Cameroon, and the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, Dr Wefuan is a physician specialising in internal medicine and rheumatology. He is currently the director of the 400-bed North West Provincial Hospital in Bamenda, Cameroon, and has been the Chairman of the Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Board since 1987, pioneering palliative care activities in the country with the establishment of an integrated hospice programme in Banso Baptist Hospital.
Dr Wefuan is among the first few Cameroonian physicians closely involved with the care of persons living with HIV/AIDS. Having worked in areas of great poverty in Cameroon, he has developed much empathy for the suffering of less privileged people. As a full time physician, for many years, he is also very familiar with the suffering encountered by cancer and HIV/AIDS patients and has been a strong advocate of holistic medical practice.
Dr Wefuan is looking forward to starting a hospice in the Bamenda Provincial Hospital following training for some of the staff planned for November 2007. Fluent in English and French, he hopes to be an advocate for palliative care in Cameroon.
